The Ozark Philharmonic Youth Orchestras (OPYO) is looking for a conductor for the 2018-19 season.
By offering an enhanced orchestral experience to young musicians from throughout NWA, Southeast Oklahoma, and Southwest Missouri, the Ozarks Philharmonic Youth Orchestras provides a nourishing, creative environment where young musicians can share their love for music. OPYO offers challenging opportunities to young musicians at three levels with three different orchestras - including full orchestra - with an outstanding conducting staff and roster of sectional leaders. OPYO is highly regarded for its commitment to superior music education, community engagement, and sensitivity to the musical, social, and emotional needs of its diverse musicians and their families. 

We are looking for an experienced teacher who is also an accomplished musician to fill this conducting role.  This person should be able to communicate technique with children aged 8-18 years old in a way that can effectively sharpen their skills, and prepare them to perform in our top level orchestra which is a full symphonic experience. The assistant directorís duties would include teaching multiple beginning 6th grade woodwind and brass classes. The assistant would also be the lead conductor and administrator of the Middle School symphonic band, a full instrumentation ensemble with a history of superior ratings at contest. The assistant director will work closely with the Director of Bands towards the success of the high school band program, both marching and concert. PRIMARY PURPOSE:    Direct and manage students participating in band activities. Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensure compliance with all state, and district requirements. Plan activities to achieve district, region, and state recognition.


  •  Bachelorís degree from an accredited college or university

     Special Knowledge/Skills:

  • Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program

 Program Planning 

1.     Direct junior high school instrumental performances, such as concert band, soloists, and ensembles.

2.     Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each studentís eligibility to participate in band.

3.     Provide for band participation at extracurricular events, including concerts.

4.     Assist in arranging transportation, lodging, and meals for out-of-town events.

Band Director Job Description

1.     Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education rules and board policy in the band area.

2.     Support band booster club activities.

3.     Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.

4.     Recommend policies to improve program.

Budget and Inventory

1.     Ensure that programs are cost-effective and funds are managed wisely.

2.     Assist with coordinating fundraising activities and manage funds.

3.     Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within department.

4.     Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing of band equipment.


1.     Develop and implement plans for instrumental music program and show written evidence of preparation as required.

2.     Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.

3.     Present subject matter according to Arkansas State Frameworks.

4.     Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.

5.     Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.

6.     Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

Student Management

1.     Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the student handbook.

2.     Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trips.

3.     Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.


1.     Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.

2.     Maintain professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.

3.     Maintain confidentiality.

The University of Central Arkansas is seeking Music Education Graduate Assistants for the 2018-19 school year.  Duties of these positions could include the following: (a) attending undergraduate music education classes for which assistantship is assigned, (b) assisting with administrative duties for the music education classes, including setup, attendance, filming student teaching, (c) tutoring students as necessary, (d) overseeing sections when the class is broken into peer teaching assignments or separate field work assignments, and (e) teaching class in the instructorís absence.
