ASMSA Music Instructor

The Arkansas School for Mathematics, Sciences, and the Arts (ASMSA), a campus of the University of Arkansas System, invites applications from highly qualified candidates for a ten-month, full-time opening as a Music Instructor beginning August 1, 2018. This member of ASMSA’s faculty will play a critical role in the continued cultivation of the school’s arts curriculum and initiatives.

In brief, ASMSA is tasked with providing extraordinary opportunities for a diverse group of students. Established by the General Assembly in 1991 as a public, residential high school to serve talented and motivated Arkansas juniors and seniors from throughout the state as a school of choice, ASMSA—located in historic downtown Hot Springs and adjacent to Hot Springs National Park—is one of only 15 public, residential high schools in the United States specializing in the education of students with an interest in advanced careers in math and science as well as passion for and creativity within studio, language and digital arts. ASMSA offers more than 60 courses for college credit, and all students earn an average of 50 hours of college credit while finishing high school.  Graduates achieve an average ACT composite score of 30.  Newsweek, The Daily Beast, and The Washington Post have ranked ASMSA among the nation’s Top 25 high schools over the past four years.

A Master’s degree in music, conducting, music education or a comparable field is required. The successful candidate must have the ability to teach courses in band, group ensemble, music theory, music appreciation as well as electives in their areas of personal interest. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in working with gifted students, teaching through technology, developing interdisciplinary curricula, team planning skills and problem solving skills.

As a residential community of learning, ASMSA’s core philosophy values the development of students’ interests and talents beyond the classroom.  As such, faculty are expected to support student portfolio development, provide tutoring assistance, facilitate successful transitions for incoming juniors, promote the school through outreach programs and contribute to the residential experience.

Preferred qualifications include at least three years of teaching experience. Visit www.asmsa.org for institutional information and an application. Send a letter of interest, teaching philosophy statement, vita, contact information for three references, completed application, and an unofficial transcript via email to humanresources@asmsa.org. Review of applications will commence on March 1, 2018, and continue until the position has been filled. The estimated salary range is $45,000 to $50,000. ASMSA is an AA/EOE employer.

Lakeside Orchestra Position

This is an outstanding position.  The administration is very supportive of the program, and the faculty is eager to collaborate on projects and concerts.  I have worked closely with the choir directors, band directors, and with classroom teachers on wonderful opportunities for the students and I know they will be warmly welcoming whomever the new orchestra director will be.   The curricular orchestra program at Lakeside is entering its fourth year and has experienced exponential growth and support from the community, both on and off the Lakeside campus.  The students are talented and driven, and the position offers an high degree of pedagogical freedom for the director in choosing methodology and programming concert repertoire.     This is an elementary and secondary position.  Traditionally, I have taught one section each (meeting M-F) of High School Orchestra, 6th Grade Orchestra, and 7th Grade Orchestra; 4 sections of 5th grade beginning orchestra (meeting once a week, 40 min classes); and 10 sections of 4th grade introduction to orchestra (each meeting once a week, 30-40 min classes).  This totals a 6 period day, plus a daily planning period and lunch period.  All buildings are on the same campus, so traveling between buildings is very easy, and the administration is very good about scheduling class times for traveling faculty members.  I have often combined the 6th and 7th grade orchestras for first semester concerts, and 7th grade and High School for some pieces on second semester concerts.  I have also traditionally offered an after school Chamber Ensemble for advanced students who take private lessons.  All additional hours worked (after school rehearsals, festival auditions and clinics, etc.) have been traditionally paid according to hourly tutoring pay.   Additionally, Lakeside School District prides itself on being the highest-paying district within driving distance!   For more information, and to apply, visit the district website for job openings:  www.lakesidesd.org, click "Become a Ram," then "Job Openings," Certified Positions, Teacher -or- https://apps2.winocular.com/lakeside/jobs/Jobpost.exe
