Dear Friends and Colleagues:

Another school year is rapidly coming to an end and as impossible as it seems, it is time to begin thinking about the next school year and how you can positively impact the lives of your students.  One of the best ways to improve your teaching and re-energize your batteries is to attend and participate in ABA!!

This year’s ABA will be held in Ft. Smith and is shaping up to be an event you don’t want to miss.  As always, it is the goal of the ABA board to provide you with the best possible resources for your program as well as provide lots of new ideas (and maybe even reinforcing some old ones) that will help you as you enter the next school year.

Here are just a few of the highlights of this year’s convention:

Eric Martin, Music For All – Eric will be giving our Keynote address as well as holding clinics

Kris Berg and the Metroplexity Big Band with guest artist Tom “Bones” Malone.  This group of outstanding musicians is our featured performing ensemble for the Friday night concert.

Richard Crain – President of The Midwest Band & Orchestra Convention, guest clinician

Bruce Pearson – Sponsored by KJOS music.  Bruce will conduct the Reading Band and present clinics

John Caldwell – “Play It Again Arkansas”, A Conversation About J. Raymond Brandon

And in an ABA first…….In cooperation with the State Department of Education, Transportation Division…….The first ever ABA bus driver training workshop!!  The workshop will be held on Saturday morning and will meet all the requirements for you to continue driving your wonderful students to events (and get that all important driver card)!

Our J. Raymond Brandon kick off concert group will be the River Valley Community Band under the direction of Chase Carter.

And as usual, we will have the ABA golf tournament (minimum 36 participants required), an expanded time for our beginning instrument teaching sessions, the new directors meet and greet, many more clinics/workshops and of course, time to visit our wonderful exhibitors!

Thanks to Julia Reynolds, all of our clinics and concerts will also count as official in-service hours!  Be sure to pre-register!!  Check with your accounting office and make sure your payment is sent to the Ft. Smith Convention Center and Visitors Bureau!!

I hope to see all of you in Ft. Smith.  Finish the year strong, get some rest in the summer then come to ABA!

Spouse Activites

Dear Friends,

I hope that you have had a great year and are making plans to have a wonderful summer.  Be sure to add ABA to that list of fun things you plan to do during the month of August.  The convention is always a great time to relax, visit with friends, shop for “back to school” clothes and just have one last chance to catch your breath before the new school year begins.

This year, the spouse activities start on Thursday morning at 9:00 am with the keynote address by Eric Martin from Music for All.  The rest of the morning is on your own, but we hope you will visit the exhibits, take time to enjoy Fort Smith’s tourist attraction, or enjoy some shopping.  Thursday afternoon at 2:30 pm, “That Cookie Lady” will be the featured spousal activity and is included in your registration fees.  This will take place at the Convention Center.

On Friday we will step back in the 1920’s and tour the Ozarks with an amazing opportunity to ride the train from The Old Frisco Station in Van Buren.  This tour is from 11:00 am to approximately 2:30 pm.  We will eat lunch on the train and enjoy some beautiful Arkansas scenery along the way.  This excursion is $50 per person.  The train is handicap accessible and there is a bathroom available on the train.  You must preregister for this event.  It should be a great experience and we will try to carpool to the station.  Watch at the registration area for a sign about leave times.

For those of you with children, Adventureland will again be offering child-care services.  Please be sure that you register for child-care on the appropriate place on the registration form.  All children MUST be pre-registered for child-care.  The BDK picture will take place on Thursday at 2:15 pm in the hotel lobby.  BDKs of ALL ages are invited to be in this picture.

The highlight of the convention will be Friday night with The Metroplexity Big Band.  You will not want to miss this performance!

I hope that the activities that we have planned will be interesting and fun for you, and I am looking forward to seeing all of you at Fort Smith!
